UNITAS is a small 501(c)(3) non-profit with a strong Board of Directors dedicated to preventing human trafficking and exploitation in the US and Eastern Europe through education and awareness and helping provide opportunities for survivors to thrive. UNITAS’ efforts are centered around creating engaging survivor-informed teaching tools to captivate middle and high school-aged youth and empower them with knowledge and skills to protect themselves from human trafficking and exploitation. Educating and protecting our youth as well as training the teachers, school staff, parents, foster parents and community members is all essential to fighting and preventing human trafficking and ending this epidemic for the coming generations.  UNITAS also uses its annual Gala in NYC during NY Fashion Week (www.UnitasGala.com) in September as a platform to raise awareness and funds as well as to engage the public, celebrities, models, and influencers in the fight against human trafficking.

UNITAS PROGRAMS AND RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

United States Prevention Education:

Human traffickers exploit tens of thousands of children every year in the US. Nationally, the average age children are first victimized is less than 15, and the breakdown is approx. 60% girls, 36% boys and 4% LGBTQ+. In response, UNITAS has created a comprehensive prevention education curriculum called “LIGHTS” for 11-18 year-olds to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from the schemes of human traffickers. Achievements: LIGHTS has been accepted for use in Washington DC public schools.  Additionally, key stakeholders in New York City, New Jersey, and other jurisdictions are currently advocating to get LIGHTS implemented in their public schools, after-school programs, and foster-care facilities as well.

Online Prevention Education - Digital Comics:

Human traffickers use the internet to reach, target, and groom children for exploitation.  In response, UNITAS has created educational digital comics to empower young people with knowledge to protect themselves & their peers from human trafficking. Click here to see the first three comics of what will be a series of ten, tracking the LIGHTS curriculum subject matter. Achievements: Since launching, the comics have been shared and viewed tens of thousands of times, and continued to be adopted and used by partner anti-trafficking organizations for their use with children as well.

Europe Prevention Education:

In partnership with the Serbian Ministry of Education and Center for Trafficking Victims Protection, UNITAS Europe developed a human trafficking prevention education curriculum for use in Serbia and is working to educate every 11-18 year old in Serbian public schools. Achievements: Since 2016, UNITAS Europe has reached over 60,000 students, 6,500 teachers & caregivers, and over 4,000 parents. The Council of Europe’s Group of Experts against Trafficking (“GRETA”), has praised our curriculum and recommended that our program model be replicated throughout Europe.

Helping Survivors Thrive:

UNITAS hosted its first advanced therapeutic survivor retreat in 2019 for survivors of sex trafficking. After suffering unspeakable violence and exploitation, these survivors came together to heal, learn life skills, and form life-long bonds with other survivor-sisters.  Achievements: Life-changing results for the 20 survivors in attendance, and plans to replicate the program at least annually in the future.

UNITAS has finalized a comprehensive prevention education curriculum called LIGHTS for  middle and high school students that has been accepted for use in Washington DC with subsequent expansion focused on NY, NJ, NV, FL and SC. The goal is to incorporate this curriculum into as many schools as possible in the coming years.

LIGHTS is a prevention education curriculum designed to empower young people with knowledge and skills to protect themselves from human trafficking and exploitation. Based on the lived experiences of teen survivors, these interwoven narratives bring to life the complex and most common ways youth in America are trafficked and exploited.

This specialized curriculum is comprised of 10 specialized 45-minute sessions. The first three are prerequisites that lay the foundation for understanding sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and sextortion. Afterwards, schools and educators may select any of the additional seven modules based on the demographics of the youth they serve to find which modules best fit the unique needs of their students. These modules have been piloted in multiple U.S. cities with children from every socio-economic background. UNITAS is working with key stakeholders in Washington D.C., New York City, New Jersey, Nevada, and elsewhere to train facilitators to teach LIGHTS to youth in schools and community groups.

UNITAS complements their prevention education curriculum with social service trainings for school-based personnel, as well as with online digital and social media campaigns to reach adults and children with this vital information. They have created anti-trafficking educational digital comics for children (aged 12-18) using engaging, vibrant visuals and language. These serve to detail the 10 most common tactics traffickers use to groom and trap kids so as to arm these children with knowledge to help protect them. The digital comics have been so well received that the Washington DC Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency chose to include a link to UNITAS’ resource page in their 1st Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Information Packet.

Thanks to the positive recognition of both the LIGHTS program and the digital comics, UNITAS was invited to ring the NASDAQ closing bell during National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, providing a great platform to bring even more public awareness to this issue.
